Agricultural Grain Originator

Location: Seymour, IN (20-mile radius territory)
Employment Type: Full-Time
Pay: $60-80k depending on experience

Position Overview

We’re seeking a motivated Grain Originator to drive grain procurement and market positioning at our Columbus, Indiana location. This role focuses on building strong producer relationships, sourcing grain efficiently, and managing market exposure to support profitability and long-term growth.

The ideal candidate combines agricultural market knowledge with strong commercial instincts, understands risk management, and thrives in a relationship-driven environment.

 

What You’ll Be Responsible For

  • Source and originate grain directly from local producers and farming operations

  • Develop and maintain long-term relationships with farmers and key customers

  • Negotiate grain prices, contract terms, and delivery timelines

  • Manage grain ownership and hedge positions using futures, options, and cash markets

  • Track and interpret market trends, basis movement, and farm marketing activity

  • Support merchandising strategies by evaluating spreads, freight costs, and carry opportunities

  • Oversee the execution and administration of grain contracts in accordance with company policies

  • Partner with operations and logistics teams to ensure smooth grain movement and scheduling

  • Maintain accurate position, margin, inventory, and forecast reporting

  • Participate in producer meetings, industry events, and customer outreach

  • Follow all safety standards and regulatory requirements

 

What We’re Looking For

Experience & Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Agribusiness, Agricultural Economics, Business, or a related field preferred

  • 2–5 years of experience in grain origination, merchandising, or commodity trading preferred

Knowledge & Skills

  • Solid understanding of futures markets, basis trading, and risk management tools

  • Strong negotiation, communication, and relationship-building abilities

  • Comfortable analyzing market data to support pricing and purchasing decisions

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and grain management or merchandising software

  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail

Work Style

  • Self-motivated and able to perform well in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment

  • Willing to travel locally to meet with producers and customers
